Friday’s performance was once again fun at Hookah Clarksville! The crowd was still a bit small because college wasn’t back in session, but management was pleased with my performance, and the crowd seemed relaxed and like they enjoyed themselves.

Most of Hookah’s customers are Americans, and I’ve received some questions about what to do about tipping belly dancers. On one hand, it is the industry standard to tip belly dancers around the world, and sometimes that’s her only income. At Hookah, there is no body tipping…meaning the tips are tossed on the floor while she’s dancing, handed to a server to hold for her, placed in her tip jar, or given to her after her performance. In some places, it is acceptable to place a tip at the hip of her costume, or inside an arm band. But on the other hand, American industries and exotic dancers have made tipping a belly dancer seem shady or cheap, even if it’s not a body/costume tip. How do you feel about it? Does tipping a belly dancer make her seem less legitimate somehow? What are your thoughts as an American or person of Middle Eastern origins?

As some of you are aware, I sustained a back injury the day of my Atlantis World Dance Company audition/Blue Rooster, Murfreesboro performance. I can speculate that I didn’t stretch long enough, that I was nervous and my muscles were tight, that my neck vertebrae were out of alignment since several days prior to the audition, and that dancing twice in one day this early on in my career were all too much for my body to handle at once. But I have since been trying everything I know how to work it out. I’ve tried pain relievers, heat, ice, anti-inflammatories, stretching, resting, massage, and chiropracty. Once again I’m reminded just how fragile our bodies are when we don’t take care of them properly, and especially now that I’m dancing and performing as a Nashville belly dancer! So, here is my plan for healing my body, and making sure I avoid future injuries.

I am now scheduled for once a month chiropractic visits, two weekly yoga classes, one 30 minute massage per week, 1 hour dance techuique class, and 1.5 hour dance company rehearsal. I have set a goal of 3+ bottles of water daily so my tissues continue to stay properly hydrated. This is my first attempt at a regimen, so I’m sure this will evolve as I realize what works, what doesn’t, what I can do at home, and what I need to hire someone else to do for me. I will be sure to stretch extra long and well prior to ANY length performance. I will rest my back as much as possible between engagements until it’s 100% healed. There isn’t anything to do now but wait, be proactive, and be patient.

What do you do to make sure you stay healthy while you’re active?

Saturday was another action-packed day of dance and festivities! There was a great turnout at Green Hills School of Dance, with food, over a dozen dance numbers, and a VERY smoothe show! My one setback was that my candle holder had feet…one of which decided to come unattached during our balancing piece, toppled the candle off my head and rolled into the audience!! As a dancer, you can never prepare for equipment malfunction, but simply have to carry on with the show! So 45 seconds in, I ended up candle-less. At least the other ladies in the group stepped it up and kept dancing with theirs! Always an adventure!!

Aside from the candle snafu, it was a fantastic event. What a great community of dancers (and TALENTED) we have here in Nashville! And for such a great cause. I couldn’t have thought of a better way to spend Saturday evening!!

Yesterday was a tremendously important and busy day for me! It started with my audition for Atlantis World Dance Company in Nashville. I was the only dancer to audition this round, so it was a quick in and out performance! Mediterranean Cuisine generously provided their restaurant space for us to take over, and aside from the stifling heat of Nashville in August in mid-afternoon, it was a great space for the audition. However, dancing in an 80-90 degree room was challenging for endurance and focus reasons. I need to learn tricks for staying cool. I think keeping my hair up in an up-do or ponytail would have helped. And the fact that my new, gorgeous Eman costume was velvet didn’t help in cooling off! lol Chiffon/LOOSE skirts are DEFINITELY next on my costume purchase list! However, after the 6-piece audition (including Classical, Pop, Drum Solo, Taqsim, Balancing and a metal/tribaret fusion piece) and following interview, I was invited to join the company! This is a culmination of years of work (and months of specific audition preparation) and I’m thrilled to have this opportunity! What an honor and priviledge to be able to dance in such great company!

Following the audition was the Umbra Fusion Belly Dance expo at The Blue Rooster in Murfreesboro. We had a decent turnout of about 70 at it’s peak, which is pretty good! The challenges for this show were a carpet stage with a drum riser in the center. Thankfully the stage was large enough that the riser wasn’t really an issue. Thanks to everyone for coming out and making the event a success, and to Umbra for inviting an Oriental dancer to join your tribal goodness! I’m glad I could contribute!

Today is a day of rest, celebration, and taking a breather before I jump into the next phase in my professional dance journey!

Check out Video #1 which is a clip from my performance at Hookah 21, Clarksville last Saturday night!

The song is Rampi Rampi by Turku, and is a traditional Turkish folk song. There was at least one patron at Hookah that night singing along! The rhythm is a 9/8, which is sometimes a bit complicated for our western ears to hear. But this rhythm (called a Kashlima) is a staple in Turkish music. This is improvisational dance, so it isn’t specifically Turkish style belly dance, but rather just me having fun with a song I love. Thanks for watching!
